New Year's Career Resolutions: Dos and Don'ts
It’s that time of year again when so many of us promise ourselves to read more books, adopt healthier habits and spend more time with our loved ones. The thing is, it can be really challenging to stay motivated. Think about it: after a long day of work when it’s raining cats and dogs, am I really going to go out for that 5k run…or am I going to binge watch the latest Netflix hit?
There are many reasons (or excuses) to forget your resolutions. But when it comes to your career it’s different – you’re getting paid to improve! And, it’s an investment in your future, so keep the following dos and don’ts in mind:
- Do clearly define your goals
You need to clearly define your objectives. For example, instead of saying “I want to develop myself at work” you could say, “I want to lead three projects this year so that I can be considered for a promotion or pay rise”.
- Don’t have unrealistic expectations
Don’t try and change everything at once. Pick one or two areas where you can realistically improve without losing focus or compromising your performance on other tasks.
- Do keep an eye on industry trends and developments
Almost every industry and occupation are going to be impacted by new technologies. Ride the wave and stay relevant by creating google alerts for keywords, subscribing to influencer’s social media accounts and spend 30 minutes a day taking all the information in.
- Don’t forget to learn a new skill
You need to be adaptable regarding learning new technical and soft skills. Whether you choose to study an in-depth course through ISBL or simply watching YouTube tutorials, you should pick a new skill to learn.
- Do continue to build your network
Networking is critical to hearing about new developments and opportunities. Regularly touch base with people in your network through Twitter, events and regional SBM groups
- Don’t forget lessons learned
Look back on the past year and figure out what you learned regarding your profession. Whatever it is, spend some time considering how it can help you improve your performance.
Keep these dos and don’ts in mind, and you’ll be well on your way to keeping your New Year’s resolutions – you’ve got this!
